Wednesday Hodgepodge

I look forward to Wednesday of each week because it's time for Hodgepodge! Just answer the questions on your own blog and link up by clicking on the button. Sure would love to have you!

1.  What's the last thing you did that could be described as 'taxing'? Trimming Maddie's feet. She tends to have what I call 'Grinch Feet' when the hair between her pads gets long. I turn her over on her back and go to work. With each snip of the scissors, she tries to bite my hands. It's like trying to wrestle a 10 ft. gator!

2.  If you could plant a garden of anything, what would it be? Besides flowers of any and every variety, which I pretty much do anyway, I'm going with okra and Big Bertha tomatoes. Homegrown okra and tomatoes, particularly in the summertime...I can't think of much better.

3.  April 10-16 is National Library Day...will you celebrate with a visit to your nearest library? When did you last make a trip to the library? What are you reading right now? What's one title on your want to read list?  I don't have any plans to visit my local library and the last time I was, actually, in a library was when Abby was in middle school. Right now, I'm reading Proverbs from the Bible as I just finished with Psalms and I'm, also, reading three different devotional books. I don't have any particular book in mind to read next. Possibly the latest book by Nicholas Sparks.

4.  Share a saying or an old wives tale you heard while growing up, you believed to be true or that you paid attention to just in case? One old wives tale I believed to be true when I was younger was that opening an umbrella indoors would bring me bad luck. Suffice it to say, I did it many times and all is well.

5.  Are you a fan of onions? Garlic? Ginger? What's a dish that contains one, two or all three items listed? I'm only a fan of sweet onions and a little garlic, but ginger, not so much. I like Chicken Teriyaki and I believe it contains all three.

6.  Where does nurturing end and indulging begin? What are some skills or qualities you think a person needs to possess in order to be viewed a mature?  I think the difference between nurturing and indulging is that nurturing is taking care of a person's most basic needs for love and sustenance; indulging is catering to a person's want for material gratification, which can lead to a sense of entitlement. Some skills/qualities that I feel a person needs to have in order to be considered as mature are: 1.) The ability to put the needs of others before your own. 2.) Being able to follow rules and understand that with each action comes a consequence. 3.) Getting an education or a stable job so you will have the ability to provide for yourself and/or your family.

7.  What leading figure in any field would you like to hear speak and why?  Lizzie Velasquez, who has been called 'The Ugliest Woman in the World', which pains me to even type...

I've seen Lizzie on several shows and she's such an incredible and inspiring young woman. She was diagnosed with a rare syndrome and is only one of three people known to have it: rare neonatal progeroid syndrome. The disorder has made it impossible for Lizzie to gain weight. In fact, she has never weighed more than 64 lbs. It, also, causes early aging and she has lost her vision in one eye because of it. When Lizzie was  just 17 years old, she came across a YouTube video referring to her as 'The Ugliest Woman in the World'. People were ruthless and Lizzie was devastated. However, when she went away to college, she knew that the only way she could put an end to the bullying was to make herself the best she could possibly be. At 26, Lizzie is now a powerful motivational speaker. I think we all could learn a lot from her about life, loving yourself, and rising above negativity.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  The temps. are dropping down to the 60's over the weekend, but we're expecting it to reach the low 80's starting on Monday! I can hardly wait! I'm curious...are you good about using sunscreen daily? I'm very diligent about it as I've had basal cell carcinoma before. My days of baking myself in the sun are long gone, but I do enjoy being outdoors. I have to be smart about it.
